Math Intervention

Kim Lawrence, Math Coach

At Laurel Meadow, our math goal is to increase students’ abilities to become mathematical problem solvers, communicate and reason mathematically, make mathematical connections, and use mathematical representations. Teachers work with students on tasks that promote reasoning and problem solving as well as use and connect mathematical representations. Our teachers pose purposeful questions and facilitate meaningful mathematical discourse. We afford students the opportunity to productively grapple with mathematical challenges.

Optimal Growth for Students

Through classroom observations and ongoing assessments, teachers, the math coach, and administrators can collect information about students’ strengths and areas of growth. This information helps determine instructional resources students may need to ensure they experience optimal growth through a variety of instructional opportunities. While our math instruction is based on our students’ needs, all instruction encompasses the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOLs) and Hanover County expectations.

Mrs. Lawrence works in a coaching capacity with teachers to help students achieve math goals and discover the joy of problem-solving. Mrs. Lawrence also provides staff development on best practices in the teaching of mathematics.

For students who struggle to master the learning objectives and need additional support, interventionists provide supplementary instruction that best meets the needs of the students. This may include morning computer tutorial or work with our SOL tutor.
